Do I need impact windows in Ocala?
Not as a code requirement. The wind-borne debris region starts where the ultimate design wind speed reaches 140 mph, or within a mile of the coastal mean high water line where it reaches 130. Marion County sits at 130 mph and is roughly forty miles from open salt water, so opening protection is not mandated on an ordinary Ocala house.
People still buy laminated glass here for sound, for security and for ultraviolet control, and those are honest reasons. Buying it because someone implied Marion County is Miami-Dade is not.
What is an exposure category, and why is it on my quote?
It is the code's shorthand for how rough the ground is upwind of your house, and it feeds directly into the pressure your windows have to resist. ASCE 7 calls a subdivision or a wooded lot Exposure B, and calls flat open country and grassland Exposure C.
Exposure C applies wherever B and D do not, so the default in the middle of a paddock is the higher one. Most window quotes in this county never mention it and quietly assume B. On a farm parcel that assumption is how you end up with an underrated window.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Marion County?
Yes. Replacing a window or an exterior door is a permitted alteration whether you are inside the City of Ocala or in the unincorporated county, and the product's Florida approval, its design pressure and the anchorage detail are part of what gets reviewed. We pull it under our own licence and meet the inspector. If a contractor asks you to sign an owner-builder affidavit so the job can start on Monday, that is a decision to be careful about.
Will new windows actually cut my power bill here?
They will help, and we will not put a number on it. Marion County is in Climate Zone 2A, where the load is cooling for most of the year, so the solar heat gain coefficient on the label does far more work than the U-factor. Air leakage matters too, especially on parcels with nothing upwind to slow the wind down.
What we will not do is print a savings figure that depends on your ducts, your thermostat and your shade, none of which we can measure from the driveway.
My bedroom window looks small. Is it legal?
Measure the clear space through the open sash, not the rough opening. Florida residential code wants 5.7 square feet net clear in a sleeping room, with at least 24 inches of clear height, 20 inches of clear width and a sill no higher than 44 inches off the floor. Grade-floor openings drop to 5.0 square feet.
Converted garages and added bedrooms in the county's big platted subdivisions fail this often, and it is far cheaper to find out before the order than after.
The glass is fogged but the window works. Can you just fix that?
Usually, yes. A fogged pane means the sealed unit lost its seal and the fill gas with it, and in most vinyl and aluminum frames the glass can be reglazed inside the sash you already have. That leaves your frames, hardware and interior trim untouched and costs a fraction of a replacement window. It is worth doing where the frame is sound and the hardware still runs. We will say plainly when it is not worth it.
